Yugi Muto (武藤 遊戯, Mutō Yūgi, spelled "Muto" pronounced "Moto" in the English dubbed anime) is the main character of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Yugi is pure-hearted and child-like. He is good at games and puzzles, especially Duel Monsters.

Yugi has a lot of friends like Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, and Téa Gardner as well as Ryo Bakura and Mokuba Kaiba. Miho Nosaka is also one of Yugi's friends in the first series anime. Yugi's friends often cheer him on from the sidelines, and Joey has dueled at his side. Yugi and Téa have been friends since childhood.

History[]

Yugi Moto was born the grandson of a noted duelist, archeologist and hobbyist, and showed some skill at the game of Duel Monsters. But unknown to him and only slightly noted at first even by those closest to him, it seemed an alternate personality would take over when the stakes of a game were high or personal. This other Yugi shifted his stance, gained a deeper voice, and was a ruthless genius at the game, and would somehow inflict horrific psychic penalties against those that tried to wrong or cheat him and those he held dear. A mental encounter later showed the group that this was not some aberrant persona the unassuming Yugi hid away. It was a separate being altogether, a spirit of the past that had come to reside in Yugi through the Millenium Puzzle once found by his grandfather. Though harsh at times, the spirit, who came to be called Yami, meant no harm to Yugi or his friends and family. Later still, it was shown that Yami was the spirit of no less than a powerful Egyptian Pharoah, a legendary master of the game whose past secrets held the solutuon to what was binding Yami to the Earth plane. In the end, almost everyone they knew, even to the spirits of the card monsters they so often played, had an incarnation in that epic time period.

Neither Yugi nor Yami ever went looking for a fight, but the initial defeat of Seto Kaiba began a series of events that drew in opponents of the present as well as the distant past, as the Millenium Puzzle echoed the larger puzzle of their lives. On at least one occasion, Yami was so willing to destroy an opponent, Kaiba actually used his ruthlessness to force him to make a life-and-death decision involving Kaiba's own life, resulting in a conflict between Yami and Yugi over how far the older spirit was willing to go. Each victory somehow set the stage for what would follow, and with each fight, Yugi began to equal Yami in his card-playing prowess, and all their friends and less bloodthirsty opponents also began to progress, to the point where challenging even the weakest of them was not something you did lightly.
